Ependimom
Originating from ependymal cells that produce cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), it occurs in the posterior and surrounding parts of the brain. Although it is also seen in adults, it is more common in childhood. It disrupts the circulation of the cerebrospinal fluid and causes symptoms such as headache, back and neck pain, weakness in the hands and arms, and nausea and vomiting. In spinal cord tumors, problems such as gait disturbance, urinary and fecal incontinence may be observed. MRI and CSF sampling are required for diagnosis. It needs to be surgically removed as soon as possible. Radiotherapy should be added to kill possible malignant cells left behind after surgical treatment. The place and effectiveness of chemotherapy in treatment is limited. In all brain tumors where the circulation of the cerebrospinal fluid is impaired, a shunt may be required to restore this flow and prevent the development of hydrocephalus. It is recommended that patients with this type of tumors be followed up in multi-disciplinary clinics where neurology, neurosurgery and physical therapy and rehabilitation teams work together.
